Spectacular Wildlife on Bribie Island

Updated: Jun 19, 2021

I’ve always loved being outdoors and spotting animals in their natural habitat. Considering Bribie Island is home to over 1500 different species of animals, it's not hard to regularly stumble across spectacular wildlife on Bribie Island!

Here are my favourite experiences up close and personal with spectacular wildlife on Bribie Island.

Kangaroos are everywhere!

If you don’t spot a Kangaroo when you visit Bribie, you aren’t trying hard enough! I have stumbled across kangaroos walking out my front door, playing in the water on the beach, lazing on the side of the road, even watching the kids train at the sports ovals.

But my best tip to spot kangaroos by the dozen is to simply four wheel drive (4WD) up to the camping grounds in the National Park or duck across to Toorbul where you will find kangaroos lazing in peoples’ front yards!

If you don’t own a 4WD, I would recommend you try out G’Day Adventures 4WD Day Tours to experience the beauty & wildlife of Bribie Island first-hand.

Dolphins at every beach

Be it Banksia Beach, Red Beach, Woorim Beach, Sylvan Beach or Bongaree Jetty – all year-round you will find ample opportunity to find both Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin and Australian humpback dolphin. Spot them playing in the waves along the ocean beach at Woorim, or see them up close as you paddle in your kayak through the Pumicestone Passage.

If you’ve arrived for the day a little unprepared, don’t worry – you can always hire a paddleboard from Bribie Island Hire Hut & Tours or try out the morning tea on the Ferryman Cruise.

Neil the seal warms our heart

You never know what you’re going to get on Bribie, and this rare find was a real treat. A young New Zealand fur seal rapidly warmed our hearts and became the locals' favourite after appearing on Woorim beach in the middle of winter.

With long, white whiskers, dark dorsal fur, a cute little pointed nose and a thick mane – who couldn’t fall in love with this cutie!

Dubbed 'Neil the Seal', he spent plenty of time sunbaking and enjoying the surf around the island's beaches – and I don’t blame him!

Emus casually roam the streets

Standing up to 1.5m tall, with shaggy brown and black feathers and a striking long neck – our emus are quite a formidable sight!

Whilst usually silent creatures, they do make unusual sounds during mating season. Unlike other birds, they don’t tweet. They grunt and make deep booming noises which can be heard up to 2km away!

They will also venture into more developed areas during long dry spells, which is when we often find them venturing out of the national park and wandering the streets of Banksia Beach.

In loving memory of Eric the Emu: #EricTheEmu was our legendary icon of Bribie Island. With his own Facebook and Instagram Pages, and also making a television appearance on Channel Seven News – he was the epitome of Island life. Sadly, Eric passed away in 2015, but his legacy lives on.

These are some of my experiences with the spectacular wildlife on Bribie Island. What experiences have you had? Please add them to the comments below or follow us on Facebook for more adventures!
