Looking for a leisurely walk, cycle or run? Banksia Beach has a perfect little 4km loop that runs from beach to bird roost.
For this little adventure, I am starting at the most northern end of the beach, but you can start at any point, there are loads of car parks all along the foreshore.
Start
We're starting out from the footpath that joins the little footbridge over to White Patch. As we set off there are open spaces left and right of the path with families and friends setting up for the day.
50m
First up is the Matthew Flinders talking monument, providing insights into some of the history related to the area. On the grass towards the beach are 2 bench seats away from foot traffic, offering a quiet little spot to sit and enjoy the view. To the left, there is a BBQ, tables, shelter and an outdoor gym.
100m
Just past the BBQ area, there is loads of open space with people throwing a frisbee and others playing a game of soccer.
200m
Open-air BBQs, tables and loads of open space with people pitching marquees for a birthday celebration.
250m
Here we find a bench seat right on the path where we take a mini pitstop to soak in the water views over to the Glass House Mountains. Behind us is another BBQ, sets of undercover tables. In front of us is the first beach access where we just saw a local fisherman reel in a bream!
350m
Next along the path is a big BBQ area equipped with kids playground, a Glass House Mountains replica monument, and toilets. This is also a popular place to find Bribie Rocks hidden in only places kids will find.
450m
Following the path you will find a basketball hoop for the bigger kids, closely followed by the second beach access and a large, grassed area.
550m
Not far away there is a low-set, sprawling tree – perfect for the kids to climb. Adjacent are picnic tables BBQ and loungers to watch the boats cruise by. More loungers and picnic tables continue to dot the foreshore as you continue along the path for the next few hundred meters.
800m
Here we find the third beach access point. A great place to spot soldier crabs dashing across the sand.
1km
Next up is the main kids park with multiple new BBQ areas under construction, toilets, and a mobile coffee bus for that mid-morning pick-me-up.
1.1km
The sand boat ramp next and is a perfect all-day hang out location with crystal clear water, soft sand and calm waters. Today we spot some people heading out in kayaks and others fishing. A great spot to base yourself for the day until the sun sets over the water. Loads of trees provide ample shelter even for the underprepared, or continue along the tree-lined path up to the final beach access before the bird roost.
1.4km
This is the final beach access next to the Kakadu Beach Shorebird sanctuary. For beachgoers, stay to the north (right) as you enter the beach. The south-end (left) is protected for migrating birds. For bird lovers, continue following the path to make your way to the next bird roost and observe birds in their natural habitat.
1.7km
This second bird roost is angled to the northwest with views back over the sanctuary through to the Glass House Mountains. Continue to follow the path to come to the mouth of the canal.
2km
We have now reached the turnaround point! Here we take a seat on the bench seat, have a rest, watch four separate pods of dolphins swim by, along with other spectacular wildlife, and dream about living in the luxury multi-million dollar homes along the canal!
