Life takes you down many paths, but my favourite ones lead to the beach.
The first time we visited Bribie Island we had not heard of Woorim. We didn’t really know what to expect, but what we discovered was a hidden gem with soft white sand, gentle surf and glorious views out to Moreton Island. We quickly learned that there are many Woorim beach surprises, and they’re not all about the view!
SURFING (for beginners)
If you’re an experienced surfer looking for some gnarly waves – fine, Woorim isn’t for you. Woorim is ideal for kids, those learning to surf or people who enjoy the thrill of a boogie board. Check out the videos on Bribie Island Surf School to get a feel for how easy it is to learn to surf on Bribie Island
4WD (northern end of the beach)
We had no idea you could drive your 4WD on the beach to the north. You do need a permit – so come prepared as rangers patrol the beaches and the national park to make sure you’re doing the right thing. It is also best to travel at low tide to avoid getting caught in the surf.
NATIONAL PARK
The majority of Bribie Island is National Park and Pine Forest, with only the southern tip of Bribie Island accommodating a population of 33,000 residents.
To access the national park you will need a 4WD. If you don’t have one, you can always join an adventure tour.
HISTORY
Looking for an educational experience – make your way to Fort Bribie. Best to access via 4WD or get prepared for a 20km trek on the sand. Not for the faint-hearted! Fort Bribie was built at the outbreak of WWII providing defence support for the Royal Australian Navy against light raiding warships.
These WWII bunkers served as Moreton Bay’s major defence to Japanese forces. But I’ll leave you to learn about the rest when you get there.
BRING THE DOG (southern end of the beach)
Park your car on Benalong Street to access the off-leash dog beach. So many pups exploring the water, chasing sticks, returning balls and having an absolute ball.
If you have a four-legged friend, this beach is the perfect stop for you.
SOCIALISE
Now that we’ve been living here for a while, outside of hanging out at the beach, we like to head to Woorim to socialise with friends. The funky cafes adjacent to the water are a great spot for a coffee or brunch.
For lunch, we like to head up to the surf club for amazing views over the water.
WILDLIFE
We have spotted spectacular wildlife all along Woorim Beach.
Kangaroos, dolphins, starfish, crabs, jellyfish, whales and even a seal!
This is just a beach that keeps on giving.
These were our Woorim Beach Surprises. We would love to know if you have any surprises we haven’t shared – just add them to the comments, or subscribe to stay up to date with more BribieGirl Adventures!
